Food deserts are a huge problem here in the United States. Area supermarkets are not supplied with fresh fruits or vegetables making their consumption almost impossible. Naked Juice and Wholesome Wave have partnered together forming a campaign to get fresh foods to these areas. The Drink Good Do Good campaign is aiming to supply 500,000 pounds of fresh food to food deserts around the country. The campaign is led by actor and philanthropist Adrian Grenier along with other celebrities including Common and Tyler Florence. These celebrities are important social justice leaders because they have the means available to do something good. They have the money and star power to get the necessary attention to these worldly problems. By having a major actor like Adrian be the face of this campaign, many people will take notice of this pressing issue and be willing to contribute to stop it.
An organization like this one can face many challenges along their journey to promote social justice. One of those being gaining support. Drink Good Do Good relies on the support of social media in order to reach its goal of supplying 500,000 pounds of food to people in need. Social media support can be hard to recieve for an unknown cause which is why the campaign uses celebrity sponsors. Celebrities already have a strong fan network that watches their every move and follows along. A celebrity sponsor gets the message out whlie also letting their fans join in. This outreach travels fast and can end up reaching millions of people.
I picked this group of people because they are fighting to solve a problem that is located right here in Charlotte. Mecklenburg County as of 2010 had sixty food deserts with over seventy thousand residents living within them. These people struggle with issues like obesity and diseases like coronary artery because of the diet they are forced to be on. Fresh fruits and vegetables are essential to a healthy diet but people living in food deserts have no access to them. Their access being cut off is a violation of article twenty-five in the UN Declaration of Human Rights. This article states “Everyone has the right to a standard of living adequate for the health and well-being of himself and of his family, including food, clothing, housing, and medical care and necessary social services….”. The work that Naked Juice and Wholesome Wave are doing will have a tremendous impact on neighborhoods like those in Charlotte and increase the overall health and well-being of our nation as a whole.
